The 49ers added wide receiver Charly Martin to compete for a roster position after losing Brandon Carswell to an ACL tear in OTAs the same day he signed with his new team.
Martin comes to San Francisco having played most recently with the Seattle Seahawks. He appeared in a career-high seven games in his rookie season of 2009 with Carolina, but only made one catch for six yards.
The San Diego Chargers originally signed Martin as an undrafted free agent that year, but was waived prior before the start of the regular season. The Panthers added Martin to the practice squad and he made seven tackles on special teams before getting waived Sept. 3, 2011.
Martin became a Seahawk Jan. 5, playing in four games and making one start. He caught four passes for 42 yards. He attended West Texas A&M and set school records with 244 receptions for 4,108 and 44 scores.
