N.Y. Jets at Atlanta (-9)

The Atlanta Falcons are the most disappointing team in the NFL right now.

They’re a high-profile club that went 13-3 last year, earned the top seed in the NFC, has a young quarterback everybody agrees is one of the best in football, and has put all kinds of playmaking talent around him on offense.

Yet this team is just 1-3 after a 30-23 home loss last week to the Patriots and counts as its only victory a win over the lowly Rams.

Last week was as sobering as reality gets: Matt Ryan, Tony Gonzalez, Julio Jones and Roddy White simply could not keep pace with Tom Brady, Matthew Mulligan, Kenbrell Thompkins and Julian Edelman.

The results made a mockery of the pigskin “pundits” at NBC Sports who referred to the Atlanta receiving corps as unstoppable in the Patriots-Falcons pregame last Sunday.

Hell, even the Jets at 2-2 have a better record than the Falcons, despite scoring just 17.0 PPG.

Atlanta’s offense is good right now. It’s just not elite. And the team’s problems have been compounded by a tough schedule: the three losses have come against opponents who are a combined 11-1 (entering Week 5; 12-3 after Sunday action).

The reality is that Atlanta simply does not have a championship-caliber defense. Entering Week 5 action, they ranked No. 25 in Defensive Passer Rating, No. 28 in Defensive Real Passing YPA and No. 29 on the Defensive Hog Index.

The Jets, meanwhile, were embarrassed last week by Jake Locker and the Titans, but also put up a better fight against the Patriots, in New England, than the Falcons did last week at home.

The problem with the Jets is that they don’t present a match-up that should trouble Atlanta’s porous defense: as bad as Atlanta is stopping opponents, the Jets offense is just as inept trying to move the ball.

The Jets are also one of the dumbest teams in football, winning two games despite a No. 30 ranking on the Intelligence Index at Cold, Hard Football Facts Insider. Atlanta, for its part, is No. 19.

The Jets were exposed by the Titans last week. We expect 2-2 to be the best of them we’ve seen all season. We also expect better things ahead for the Falcons, a team that should have its way against an opponent that presents few match-up problems. But double digits for a struggling team with a bad defense is a big nut to swallow.

Pick: Atlanta 28, N.Y. Jets 14
