Mock Draft 1.0

Khalil Mack

Is it Jadeveon Clowney,Khalil Mack, a quarterback or offensive tackle taken with the first pick by the Houston Texans? Here is my first Mock Draft.

It always seems like the NFL is in the news, even in March. Free agency began a few days ago and has fans across the country in frenzy.

Next, everyone will turn their attention to the NFL Draft, which begins on Thursday, May 8th. It's less than two months away.

This is obviously based on teams staying put in their current spots and order. I believe that there will be an abundance of trades, as teams will target players they want in the first round of this draft and franchises will be moving up and down the initial round.

Who's targeting defensive end Jadeveon Clowney? Who wants a quarterback or offensive tackle?

With that said, here is my Mock 1.0.

Round 1
1
Houston Texans
Height: 6-5
Weight: 266
Hometown: Rock Hill, S.C.
Class: 2014 JR
Position: DE
Rating:
Overall Rank: 1
Pos Rank: 1

Head Coach: Bill O'Brien
2013 Record: 2-14

ANALYSIS: I see the Texans grabbing the best athlete in the draft in defensive end Jadeveon Clowney. He will learn how to be a pro under the watchful eyes of J.J. Watt and Brian Cushing. Clowney has the tools to become an elite pass rusher in the NFL. I believe he's the best non-quarterback athlete to enter the draft in some time. You just can't pass on a talent like this one, especially in the pass happy league that the NFL has become. He just needs a little guidance and coaching to harness all of his immense talent.

Round 1
2
St. Louis Rams
Height: 6-5
Weight: 308
Hometown: Missouri City, Texas
College: Texas A&M
Class: 2014 SR
Position: OT
Rating:
Overall Rank: 6
Pos Rank: 2

Head Coach: Jeff Fisher
2013 Record: 7-9

ANALYSIS: I have my doubts that the Rams will hang on to this pick, as I am sure they will have several suitors courting them to trade out of No. 2 hole. If they do stay I see them going offensive tackle with either Greg Robinson or Jake Matthews. Robinson has a higher ceiling but Matthews is the safer pick. I think they go with the Texas A&M standout, if they choose to stay at this spot.

Round 1
3
Jacksonville Jaguars
Height: 6-0
Weight: 207
Hometown: Kerrville, Texas
College: Texas A&M
Class: 2014 SO
Position: QB
Rating:
Overall Rank: 9
Pos Rank: 2

Head Coach: Gus Bradley
2013 Record: 4-12

ANALYSIS: I could certainly see the Jaguars going with outside linebacker Khalil Mack here. He would give Jacksonville head coach Gus Bradley a dynamic pass rusher for his defense. But the Jags also need a quarterback. Blake Bortles may have the most upside of this group and he's from nearby Oviedo, Fla. but here they go with Johnny Manziel. He will be their franchise quarterback that they have been hunting for.

Round 1
4
Cleveland Browns
Height: 6-2
Weight: 214
Hometown: Miami, Fla.
College: Louisville
Class: 2014 JR
Position: QB
Rating:
Overall Rank: 12
Pos Rank: 3

Head Coach: Mike Pettine
2013 Record: 4-12

ANALYSIS: The Browns could go a number of different ways but with Manziel gone to the Jaguars they have to solidify the quarterback position and will have their choice between Teddy Bridgewater and Blake Bortles. Here they go with the more ready Bridgewater, from nearby Louisville. Bridgewater has been a big winner at every level of the game and there's no reason to think that he can't be once again for the Browns.

Round 1
5
Oakland Raiders
Height: 6-1
Weight: 211
Hometown: Fort Myers, Fla.
College: Clemson
Class: 2014 JR
Position: WR
Rating:
Overall Rank: 4
Pos Rank: 1

Head Coach: Dennis Allen
2013 Record: 4-12

ANALYSIS: The Raiders have so many needs and are in prime position to land a quarterback, an offensive tackle, or a pass rusher with this spot but they go with arguably the most explosive player in this draft in Clemson wide receiver Sammy Watkins. Al Davis is smiling over this pick, as Watkins will give the silver and black and big time playmaker for their offense.

Round 1
6
Atlanta Falcons
Height: 6-5
Weight: 332
Hometown: Thibodaux, La.
College: Auburn
Class: 2014 SR
Position: OT
Rating:
Overall Rank: 3
Pos Rank: 1

Head Coach: Mike Smith
2013 Record: 4-12

ANALYSIS: This will be a very interesting pick for the Falcons, as they will likely have their choice between a premier offensive tackle and pass rusher. Do they go with offensive tackle Greg Robinson or outside linebacker Khalil Mack? They have to protect their franchise quarterback in Matt Ryan and go with the Auburn Tiger.

Round 1
7
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Player: Khalil Mack
Height: 6-3
Weight: 251
Hometown: Fort Pierce, Fla.
College: Buffalo
Class: 2014 SR
Position: OLB
Rating:
Overall Rank: 2
Pos Rank: 1

Head Coach: Lovie Smith
2013 Record: 4-12

ANALYSIS: Tampa has so many holes. They are pedestrian at receiver, have holes to fill on the offensive line, need more help at tight end and have an unproven pass rush. First things first, Lovie Smith is quickly building up the Buccaneers defense. They did well in free agency, landing talent up front. Now they go and get their pass rushing outside linebacker in Khalil Mack. Tampa Bay is ecstatic that this former Buffalo standout falls to No. 7.

Round 1
8
Minnesota Vikings
Height: 6-5
Weight: 232
Hometown: Oviedo, Fla.
College: UCF
Class: 2014 SR
Position: QB
Rating:
Overall Rank: 8
Pos Rank: 1

Head Coach: Mike Zimmer
2013 Record: 5-10

ANALYSIS: The Vikings are in a great position to land a big time player. They hit the mother lode last year. Will Minnesota hold this spot or trade out [up or back]. They could move, depending on where the quarterbacks go. In this mock draft Blake Bortles is still on the board. They don't pass on this signal caller from UCF.

Round 1
9
Buffalo Bills
Player: Taylor Lewan
Height: 7-7
Weight: 309
Hometown: Scottsdale, Ariz.
College: Michigan
Class: 2014 SR
Position: OT
Rating:
Overall Rank: 10
Pos Rank: 3

Head Coach: Doug Marrone
2013 Record: 6-10

ANALYSIS: Doug Marrone has options here. They could nab a great wide receiver or the draft's top end to help out their young quarterback. The Bills could also address their defense. But would they pass on Michigan offensive tackle Taylor Lewan? I don't think so.

Round 1
10
Detroit Lions
Height: 6-11
Weight: 199
Hometown: Jeffersonville, Ga.
Class: 2014 SR
Position: CB
Rating:
Overall Rank: 18
Pos Rank: 1

Head Coach: Jim Caldwell
2013 Record: 7-9

ANALYSIS: Many feel the Lions could take Mike Evans with this selection. But they could grab a very good wide receiver to compliment Calvin Johnson later in the draft. The defense needs help, especially on the back end. Detroit will have their pick of the top defensive back. They land Michigan State standout cornerback Darqueze Dennard here.

Round 1
11
Tennessee Titans
Height: 6-0
Weight: 202
Hometown: Huntsville, Texas
Class: 2014 SR
Position: CB
Rating:
Overall Rank: 21
Pos Rank: 2

Head Coach: Ken Whisenhunt
2013 Record: 7-9

ANALYSIS: The Titans are another team of mystery. They could go in a number of different directions. But they just lost cornerback Alterraun Verner in free agency to the Bucs. So Justin Gilbert is the pick here. He's one of the best available and this cornerback also fills a need.

Round 1
12
New York Giants
Player: Anthony Barr
Height: 6-5
Weight: 255
Hometown: Los Angeles, Calif.
College: UCLA
Class: 2014 SR
Position: OLB
Rating:
Overall Rank: 7
Pos Rank: 2

Head Coach: Tom Coughlin
2013 Record: 7-9

ANALYSIS: The Giants could continue to rebuild their offensive front. If Lewan is available he could very well be the player here. But in this mock draft he's already gone, so New York addresses the other side of the ball and selects UCLA outside linebacker Anthony Barr. He gives their defense and pass rush a huge boost.

Round 1
13
St. Louis Rams
Player: Mike Evans
Height: 6-5
Weight: 231
Hometown: Galveston, Texas
College: Texas A&M
Class: 2014 SO
Position: WR
Rating:
Overall Rank: 14
Pos Rank: 2

Head Coach: Jeff Fisher
2013 Record: 7-9

ANALYSIS: In such a short time the Rams have rebuilt and revamped their roster. This draft is no different. St. Louis has already picked an offensive tackle. Here, they could go a few different ways. But they get Sam Bradford a huge playmaker on the perimeter in wide receiver Mike Evans from Texas A&M.

Round 1
14
Chicago Bears
Player: Aaron Donald
Height: 6-1
Weight: 285
Hometown: Pittsburgh, Pa.
College: Pittsburgh
Class: 2014 SR
Position: DT
Rating:
Overall Rank: 5
Pos Rank: 1

Head Coach: Marc Trestman
2013 Record: 8-8

ANALYSIS: Aaron Donald is one of the best football players in this draft. He was so productive at Pitt and this defensive tackle knocked it out of the park at the NFL combine last month. Now he's a Bear and is an ideal fit as a three-technique defensive tackle for their Chicago defense.

Round 1
15
Pittsburgh Steelers
Height: 6-1
Weight: 208
Hometown: Orlando, Fla.
College: Alabama
Class: 2014 JR
Position: S
Rating:
Overall Rank: 19
Pos Rank: 1

Head Coach: Mike Tomlin
2013 Record: 8-8

ANALYSIS: The Steelers have to revamp their defense and could go with a pass rusher, linebacker or help in the secondary. If they address defensive back they go safety here and have their choice between HaHa Clinton-Dix or Calvin Pryor. Pittsburgh goes with the former Crimson Tide star.

Round 1
16
Dallas Cowboys
Height: 6-2
Weight: 299
Hometown: Lake City, Fla.
College: Florida State
Class: 2014 JR
Position: DT
Rating:
Overall Rank: 13
Pos Rank: 2

Head Coach: Jason Garrett
2013 Record: 8-8

ANALYSIS: I think Dallas is hoping that Donald falls to them at this spot because he's the perfect under tackle for their defensive scheme. But he's gone, so the Cowboys go with Timmy Jernigan from FSU. He may not be as athletic as Donald but he would be a great pick here for Jerry Jones and his defense.

Round 1
17
Baltimore Ravens
Height: 6-2
Weight: 234
Hometown: Theodore, Ala.
College: Alabama
Class: 2014 SR
Position: MLB
Rating:
Overall Rank: 15
Pos Rank: 1

Head Coach: John Harbaugh
2013 Record: 8-8

ANALYSIS: Baltimore will likely address their defense here and have options. But how can Ozzie Newsome and the Ravens pass on the top inside linebacker in this draft in C.J. Mosley. They won't and pick this former Alabama star. He can play in any scheme and should excel for the Ravens.

Round 1
18
New York Jets
Player: Marqise Lee
Height: 6-0
Weight: 192
Hometown: Gardena, Calif.
College: USC
Class: 2014 JR
Position: WR
Rating:
Overall Rank: 16
Pos Rank: 3

Head Coach: Rex Ryan
2013 Record: 8-8

ANALYSIS: The Jets need some firepower on offense. They have a variety of options at wide receiver and tight end Eric Ebron in still on the board. But New York can't pass on wideout Marqise Lee. The former Trojan should make an instant impact for the J-E-T-S.

Round 1
19
Miami Dolphins
Player: Zack Martin
Height: 6-4
Weight: 308
Hometown: Indianapolis, Ind.
College: Notre Dame
Class: 2014 SR
Position: OT
Rating:
Overall Rank: 11
Pos Rank: 4

Head Coach: Joe Philbin
2013 Record: 8-8

ANALYSIS: Mock drafts are never easy but making the Miami pick at this spot has to be one of the easier ones here. They have to rebuild their offensive line and the fish can't pass up the versatile offensive tackle and guard Zack Martin. He's a terrific player from Notre Dame that could play in south Florida for a dozen years.

Round 1
20
Arizona Cardinals
Player: Derek Carr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 214
Hometown: Bakersfield, Calif.
College: Fresno State
Class: 2014 SR
Position: QB
Rating:
Overall Rank: 24
Pos Rank: 4

Head Coach: Bruce Arians
2013 Record: 10-6

ANALYSIS: I have to make a wildcard (no pun intended) in every mock and that time is here. Carson Palmer is not getting any younger. Sure, Arizona could pick up an offensive lineman or get some help for their defense. But at some point Bruce Arians has to be thinking about grooming his future quarterback. The Cardinals don't pass on quarterback Derek Carr.

Round 1
21
Green Bay Packers
Player: Eric Ebron
Height: 6-4
Weight: 250
Hometown: Greensboro, N.C.
Class: 2014 JR
Position: TE
Rating:
Overall Rank: 20
Pos Rank: 1

Head Coach: Mike McCarthy
2013 Record: 8-7

ANALYSIS: There is certainly the possibility of the Packers going for secondary help and getting a guy like Calvin Pryor. They could shore up their offensive front or perhaps land a nose guard. But I don't see Green Bay passing on tight end Eric Ebron. He is a dynamic talent that fills a big need.

Round 1
22
Philadelphia Eagles
Player: Calvin Pryor
Height: 6-11
Weight: 207
Hometown: Port Saint Joe, Fla.
College: Louisville
Class: 2014 SR
Position: S
Rating:
Overall Rank: 22
Pos Rank: 2

Head Coach: Chip Kelly
2013 Record: 10-6

ANALYSIS: Chip Kelly and the Eagles had great success in year one of his regime in Philadelphia. During this offseason, they must address their defense, in particular the defensive back corps. They could go cornerback but with Calvin Pryor on the board, Kelly and company go with this safety from Louisville.

Round 1
23
Kansas City Chiefs
Height: 6-9
Weight: 189
Hometown: Santa Rosa, Calif.
College: TCU
Class: 2014 SR
Position: CB
Rating:
Overall Rank: 33
Pos Rank: 5

Head Coach: Andy Reid
2013 Record: 11-5

ANALYSIS: It's no secret that Andy Reid could very well get a very good wide receiver here at this spot, but the Chiefs also need help in the secondary. With Pryor and Clinton-Dix gone Kansas City turns to cornerback Jason Verrett from TCU. They will get their wide receiver help later in the draft.

Round 1
24
Cincinnati Bengals
Player: Bradley Roby
Height: 6-11
Weight: 194
Hometown: Suwanee, Ga.
College: Ohio State
Class: 2014 JR
Position: CB
Rating:
Overall Rank: 32
Pos Rank: 4

Head Coach: Marvin Lewis
2013 Record: 11-5

ANALYSIS: The Bengals could opt for a pass rusher here like Kony Ealy but the run on defensive backs has begun. So Cincinnati goes for Ohio State star cornerback Bradley Roby here.

Round 1
25
San Diego Chargers
Player: Kony Ealy
Height: 6-4
Weight: 273
Hometown: New Madrid, Mo.
College: Missouri
Class: 2014 JR
Position: DE
Rating:
Overall Rank: 27
Pos Rank: 2

Head Coach: Mike McCoy
2013 Record: 9-7

ANALYSIS: The Chargers could go with a cornerback here. But instead they go with this draft's No. 2 pass rushing defensive end in Kony Ealy from Missouri. He's athletic, long and fast off the edge.

Round 1
26
Cleveland Browns
Player: Ryan Shazier
Height: 6-1
Weight: 237
Hometown: Plantation, Fla.
College: Ohio State
Class: 2014 JR
Position: OLB
Rating:
Overall Rank: 17
Pos Rank: 3

Head Coach: Mike Pettine
2013 Record: 4-12

ANALYSIS: The Browns have their quarterback and could go with a play making wide receiver here. But those guys can be found later in the draft. They can't pass on former Ohio State star linebacker Ryan Shazier. He's a speedy playmaker that will be a huge addition to the Cleveland defense.

Round 1
27
New Orleans Saints
Player: Dee Ford
Height: 6-2
Weight: 252
Hometown: Odenville, Ala.
College: Auburn
Class: 2014 SR
Position: DE
Rating:
Overall Rank: 30
Pos Rank: 3

Head Coach: Sean Payton
2013 Record: 11-5

ANALYSIS: The Saints could actually use another wide receiver as well as an offensive tackle. But they also have to continue to find pass rushers for their new 3-4 defense. Dee Ford from Auburn is still on the board and this is their pick here.

Round 1
28
Carolina Panthers
Height: 6-5
Weight: 240
Hometown: Belle Glade, Fla.
College: Florida State
Class: 2014 SR
Position: WR
Rating:
Overall Rank: 23
Pos Rank: 4

Head Coach: Ron Rivera
2013 Record: 12-4

ANALYSIS: The Panthers defense is one of the NFL's best. The offense is solid but could use some more playmakers. The draft is deep at receiver. Carolina goes with the big and long Kelvin Benjamin from Florida State. He's needs some work but his upside is ernormous.

Round 1
29
New England Patriots
Height: 7-6
Weight: 310
Hometown: Minneapolis, Minn.
College: Minnesota
Class: 2014 SR
Position: DT
Rating:
Overall Rank: 25
Pos Rank: 3

Head Coach: Bill Belichick
2013 Record: 12-4

ANALYSIS: Is it me or do the Patriots have this spot on lockdown year in and year out every draft? New England will once again be able to grab a great player for their offensive front, defensive line or in the secondary. Here, they decide between Louis Nix and Ra'Shede Hageman and go with the versatile lineman from Minnesota.

Round 1
30
San Francisco 49ers
Player: Louis Nix
Height: 6-2
Weight: 331
Hometown: Jacksonville, Fla.
College: Notre Dame
Class: 2014 JR
Position: DT
Rating:
Overall Rank: 34
Pos Rank: 4

Head Coach: Jim Harbaugh
2013 Record: 12-4

ANALYSIS: The 49ers need help on the backend in the secondary and at wide receiver but can't pass on the athletic nose tackle in Louis Nix from Notre Dame.

Round 1
31
Denver Broncos
Height: 6-3
Weight: 212
Hometown: Madison, Ala.
College: Vanderbilt
Class: 2014 SR
Position: WR
Rating:
Overall Rank: 42
Pos Rank: 7

Head Coach: John Fox
2013 Record: 13-3

ANALYSIS: Denver has made some huge additions during free agency thus far. They could continue to rebuild their pass rush or get help in the secondary. But the Broncos will only have Peyton Manning for so much longer. They get him help and pick Vanderbilt wide receiver Jordan Matthews.

Round 1
32
Seattle Seahawks
Player: Jace Amaro
Height: 6-5
Weight: 265
Hometown: San Antonio, Texas
College: Texas Tech
Class: 2014 JR
Position: TE
Rating:
Overall Rank: 38
Pos Rank: 2

Head Coach: Pete Carroll
2013 Record: 13-3

ANALYSIS: I could very well see Pete Carroll and Seattle going with a defensive tackle like Dominique Easley here. Or they could have their pick of the litter at running back or nab a terrific wide receiver. The Seahawks could also bolster their offensive front. Instead, I see them going for the best available tight end – Jace Amaro from Texas Tech. He should give quarterback Russell Wilson a big weapon.
