Marquis Spruill out for 2014 season

The Falcons have their first season-ending injury of the preseason.

Falcons rookie linebacker Marquis Spruill will miss the 2014 season after tearing his ACL at practice on Wednesday.

Spruill was drafted in the fifth round in May out of Syracuse.

Atlanta continues to have issues at linebacker. Sean Weatherspoon tore his Achilles and will miss the entire season. Pat Angerer, signed as a free agent a few weeks ago, is out with a concussion.

The injury to Spruill gives Yawin Smallwood a better chance to make the team as an inside linebacker. The team may also bring in a free agent since it is under the cap. It's been rumored Nick Barnett, who played with Washington last season, could be signed to help the depth at linebacker. Barnett was a star with the Green Bay Packers from 2003 through 2010. He then played two years in Buffalo before going to the Redskins last season.
