Crumpler sets single-game career high

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - For the third straight game, tight end Alge Crumpler established another statistical high point in his four-year career.

His two touchdown catches in the first half of a 14-10 victory over the New York Giants gave the Atlanta Falcons all their points Sunday night, but Crumpler was not in a talkative mood afterward.

He particularly regretted not having a better chance to catch Michael Vick's third-down pass late in the third quarter. Crumpler had run past the coverage and knew safety Terry Cousin didn't have a good angle to tackle him at the New York 25.

Vick put too much zip on his throw, however.

"That's the ball that would've iced it for us," Crumpler said. "We still won, but we killed ourselves with penalties. We stress not turning the football over and not having any stupid penalties. We just didn't capitalize."

Alge Crumpler, who played last season in his first Pro Bowl, set career highs in catches and receiving yards in wins over Denver and Tampa Bay in the previous two games. He had no interest in discussing a celebratory dance he performed after his first score, a 6-yard catch, in which he knelt quickly on one knee before hopping up and kneeling on another.

"I don't even remember it," Crumpler said. "I'll have to watch the film to remind myself."

BY THE NUMBERS: Vick, who ran for 104 yards to become the first NFL quarterback with five single-game efforts of at least 100, is on pace to run for 1,024 and break Bobby Douglass' single-season mark (968 in 1972).

Peerless Price failed to make a catch for the first time in 81 games.

Left end Patrick Kerney and nose tackle Ed Jasper each shared a sack on the first, but the team didn't record another one against rookie Eli Manning. The Giants surrendered 24 in their previous four games.

New York has lost three straight to the Falcons in the last three years at Giants Stadium.

Atlanta became the first team since the Washington Redskins in 1981-83 to win that many consecutive games here.

Right cornerback Jason Webster defended three passes and had his first interception since signing as a free agent from San Francisco eight months ago.

Right end Brady Smith, who scored his first touchdown after stripping St. Louis quarterback Marc Bulger and recovering a Week 2 fumble in the end zone, recorded the first interception of his nine-year career.

HE SAID IT: Manning was glad to get his first start out of the way. Strangely, his 6-yard touchdown pass to Jeremy Shockey allowed him to join father Archie (with New Orleans' Dave Parks in 1971) and brother Peyton (with Indianapolis' Marvin Harrison in 1998) by throwing for six yards on his first career score.

The Falcons didn't allow a completion longer than 18 yards.

"They were having a lot of cover-2, a lot of safeties deep and always had a guy back there, so I thought we moved the ball down the field in the second (half) very well," said Manning, who completed 13 of 23 passes for 116 yards after intermission. "I threw that costly interception (to Smith in the third quarter) that really hurt us, so it's a learning experience."

ACHES AND PAINS: Fullback Justin Griffith (knee), cornerback Kevin Mathis (shoulder) and free safety Cory Hall (chest) all left the game with injuries, but Mathis and Hall later returned. Stanley Pritchett replaced Griffith in the fourth quarter.

Flanker Brian Finneran (chest) didn't dress for the game.

Jasper played with 11 staples and five stitches in his forehead. He sustained the lacerations last week against the Tampa Bay.

The Giants, who already lost starting ends Michael Strahan and Keith Washington to season-ending injuries, played without rookie strong safety Gilbril Wilson (neck). He leads New York with three interceptions, 55 tackles, 49 of them solo.
