Biography:
The Most Valuable Defensive Player in Alabama’s 14-13 win over Iowa State in the Independence Bowl, Waine came to Alabama as a walk-on and is now the number one Tide strong safety. After being redshirted in 1998 and seeing no action in 1999 or 2000, he earned the “Paul ‘Bear’ Bryant Award” as the team’s best walk-on in the spring of 2001. That helped earn him a scholarship and last fall he won a starting job. His most memorable moment came when he blocked a fourth quarter Iowa State punt to set up Bama’s winning bowl score. He finished the season as the third leading tackler with 68 stops and had nine pass break-ups. He has a vertical leap of 39 1/2 inches.
